Mains Hook Up
Mains Hook-up Cable Considerations. The quality and condition of the mains EHU affects how things work in the vehicle. This EHU lead was from my own van, everything worked fine except the Water never got Hot on v, it got warm, so the element was clearly working, just never got above tepid. On Gas the water heated up to full temperature. The charger ran the lights and charged the battery, the Television worked perfectly on v and our Volt Meter inside the van showed v at the 13amp sockets. I cut the cable back to sound Copper and fitted a new Blue Socket and the Water Heater worked perfectly. I can only guess that the contact inside the connector was just good enough to supply everything, except the high current of the Water Heater? That shows the type of impact the EHU cable can have. When you need to be on EHU you want to maximise every amp at the Bollard especially if it is s 3amp Site, you might be surprised what part the Hook-up cable plays.

Contact How to Wire up your Campervan Wiring up your camper van can be very daunting at first, however if you follow some simple rules, it can be just as easy as wiring up a normal household plug. Below is a diagram that shows a typical installation of a V Panel. I have used this as an example as it is the most difficult one do, Anything smaller or with less switches just gets easier.
Caravan Pitches. We have 32 pitches for Caravans or Motorhomes – all priced at £15 per pitch per night. All within a short reach of the showerblock and chemical toilet disposal point.
Alde wet heating on gas 5 Caravan mover See text From the table you can see that modern flat panel TV’s are quite economical and that tthe newer LED backlit ones are even more efficient. Do make sure that the one you buy can be run directly off 12 volts. The table also shows that fluorescent lights use less power than halogen lights and that LED lights are more efficient again.
Some are even available as direct replacements for the spotlights found in more recent caravans. Clearly, swapping to this type of lighting is going to make a significant impact on battery life, especially during long dark evenings. We often get asked about the power consumption of caravan movers with people frightened that using a mover would quickly flatten their battery. Whilst it is true that movers do use a lot of power they are normally used for no more than a minute or two on each outing.
The effect of this on a good battery is negligible and nothing to worry about. Using power efficiently is the first step to managing without a mains hook up. The simplest and most cost effective way of getting additional power is to buy a second battery. This can be swapped with the main battery when it runs down or alternatively for telly addicts be used just to power the TV. Should you wish to do so it is possible to connect two batteries together.
However there should be a suitable fuse local to each battery and ideally the batteries should be identical. This arrangement can work well when used in conjunction with solar panels or wind generators see below.

That is the minimum power that a typical 12v Fridge element requires to operate. Any less and it will just take the excess from the Habitation area battery, running it flat. Be wary of the Votronic copies, like those from the likes of Phaesun, they are not Votronics, but look exactly the same. When this connectivity is used, it enormously simplifies the wiring, improving reliability and functionality.
Even in the recent poor weather both leisure and chassis batteries are maintaining full charge and I rarely need to use hook up unless using a lot of electric heating.
Translate This Page Updated: R” The above is probably the best feedback we have had. How many people drive 6 hours each way to get a Motorhome repaired and are elated by the experience? We are seeing more and more Motorhome Fuseboards that have burnt out. Some have been so badly burnt it has been hard to see the reason for the Fire, but it seems to be consistent with poor batteries, an overlarge battery bank or both.
Even when things get as bad as the unit above we can still supply a new Fuseboard and effect a repair to as good as new. The above Fuseboards are time consuming to replace as so much wiring is usually damaged. Along with the cost of a replacement Fuseboard, the bill can be high, so don’t let your batteries get tired.
Replace the batteries before they get past their best.

It may seem complicated to the newcomer, but a few minutes spent understanding the basic principles, common terms and definitions in use will be worthwhile in ensuring your enjoyment of our product. Measurement Of Nose Weight, Towing Vehicle’s Rear Suspension Another simple method is to use bathroom scales and a suitable piece of strong timber as a platform to rest the tow hitch on. The timber can be placed vertically between the caravan tow hitch and the bathroom scales.
The timber should be of such length that when the caravan tow hitch is lowered onto it, using the jockey wheel, the caravan floor is horizontal. Recommended Tow Ball Height There are a number of suspension aids available and advice should be sought on which to use and how to fit. It is important to ensure that the caravan is towed either level or slightly nose down.

It is unusual for it to happen in the UK, it is more likely to happen when touring on the continent. So what is it and how does it affect you? Simply, it is the live and neutral wires are the wrong way round on the EHU bollard.
Hi Andrew The CEE 16A plug is the only socket used for caravan hook up in the UK, so you won’t need any adaptors. To research sites, the best way would be via the two main UK clubs.
Whether you have a Volkswagen T1, a Citroen H van or a Sprinter, wiring your van will be more cost effective if you plan it well. Many people plan their Campervan Wiring piecemeal, they start with a Habitation area battery then add a split charge relay. Then a mains charger, then Lights, Gas heater blower controller, water pump, power monitoring, Solar charging of the Habitation battery, etc. One thing often not built in is the ability for a ‘one touch’ isolation of every device from draining power when the van isn’t being used.
You don’t need to go around turning everything off when you put the van away, just one touch shuts down all 12v. See here for a supplier: The wiring is much simpler to install and understand 2.
Electrical & Power
The most common question asked and in some ways the most difficult as it will depend on five main factors. A do you have a mover? B does your van have an Alarm?
Caravan Equipment. You will be shown around your caravan by a member of our team so you are fully aware of how the equipment operates. This demonstration can be tailored to your needs.
There are two main ways you can power electrical devices on the campsite. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up, which provides a V supply as you would find at home. To find more about charging leisure batteries see our Battery Charging Data Sheet. Your own power pack A leisure battery is a great way to provide electricity when you are away from a mains connection.
You can use it to power a range of 12V devices, from lights to toilet flushes and from televisions to caravan movers. However, the appliances must be designed to run on a 12V supply. Most caravans, motorhomes and folding campers will have a leisure battery installed. Hooking up to the mains Most commercial and Club campsites will offer electric hook-ups on some or all of their pitches. These provide a V supply, which can power most of the appliances you might use at home. Tripping the electrical supply can make you unpopular on site.
The least you will need to do is contact the site manager to ask him to reset the system. Electricity can be dangerous, especially in the damp conditions of a tent or in the open air. Even a 12V battery can give you a nasty shock if used incorrectly. Used in the right way however, campers can benefit from mains electricity and, if they take the right precautions, they can do it safely.

Thankfully Cool My Camper offers a cost effective and quick method by which you can remove heat from a confined space, thus cooling the air, and remove humidity. Unlike water-cooled or thermoelectric systems the system is refrigerant based split pack with an external condenser unit and internal evaporator unit. Yet there are no installation costs and the portable and can hang on your van window, or sit on the caravan a-frame or stand on a table.
A 12 volt battery requires a charging voltage of v for it to become fully charged. In most older Caravan systems the voltage does not rise above v, this is so that the battery does not overcharge and start ‘gassing’.

This guide has been written in response to some of the questions that have been asked on various forums. It describes the electrical systems on a typical caravan and how they work. However, as caravans have evolved to the demands of the modern caravanner, these systems have become more complex, but a basic understanding of a simple system will help you diagnose faults even on complex systems in a modern caravan and help to maintain your caravan over the coming years.
Apologies to those reading that have some knowledge and find the early part a little simplistic. I have described a generic car and caravan wiring system, it will not be identical to your car or caravan.
