Binocular Repairs

Posted 16 July – Brightness and color are both exceptionally good. Viewing into a brightly lit area with the sun low on the horizon creating a lot of glare, its stray light control is extremely good, equal to that of my best binoculars such the Nikon 8X32 SE or 7X50 Tropical. FOV is about 6. Sharpness of image is very good but does not immediately impress as its brightness and stray light control do. This may be due to lack of phase coating. I haven’t used it in low light conditions yet but with the big exit pupil and its excellent anti-reflective coatings it should perform well. The 7 mm exit pupil gives a very relaxed view which I like. Build quality, as expected, is great. My example is over 20 years old and focusing and diopter adjustment are perfect, and it is still immaculately clean inside.

I recall a nice vintage set of Zeiss 6x30s I had at one time. Compact and, according to one fellow who knew more about them than I did, probably WWI vintage. They did not have a central focusing knob, but rather the individual diopter correction rings for each eyepiece. As I dimly recall, they were very well corrected and produced a nice image.

With some of this content dating back to the times when slow dial-up Internet access was the norm, the article was originally text heavy because illustrations were by necessity kept simple and to a minimum. Over the decades we have, and will continue to, on occasion add this or that mention of or illustration of items in our archives and museum collection, this to break up the monotony of text, make corrections with much gratitude to Dr.

It was never our intent to write one comprehensive and all-encompassing history of Zeiss, that would require volumes to do it justice, but rather to explain why we at Company Seven remain grateful for and in awe of the achievements by Zeiss. From its inception through to the middle 19th century, lens making was a craft that was essentially passed on from generation to generation. Innovations had typically resulted from trial and error experimentation; this was a costly and time consuming process that could not factor in all of the possible variables in lens making materials and design.

It would be left up to one who could employ scientific methods of study, and then devise the mathematical formulas to characterize the physics of optics to make the next important technological leaps possible. It would then be asked of a chemist to invent and manufacture those raw materials necessary to make the new designs possible.

And it would be one man to bring this combination together to create a concern of unrivaled accomplishment. Carl Friedrich Zeiss 23, bytes. Classic 8×30 Porro binoculars by Holger Merlitz Long time before, almost a century ago, 8×30 binoculars of Porro prism design had already reached quite a reasonable performance level. This was so because 8×30 was about to establish itself as one of the standard sizes in military applications, at least in Europe, and there has always been plenty of money available for war toys at any times.

No surprise that these devices had quickly been accepted on the civilian market as well in rather peaceful times.

We already have some offers of help to add some other hard-to-find accessories for this telescope, these will be acquired over time for our exhibits. While many other people no doubt have accumulated extensive collections of telescopes, including Unitron and Polarex, we know of no where else where the public is welcome to visit and can be so impressed by the presence of those telescopes that helped to stimulate interest at the beginning of the space age as at Company Seven.

Each article we host about Unitron telescopes already in our display explains the history of these telescopes and of Nihon Seiko Kenkyusho, Ltd. We expanded our introductory index page of our Unitron section to explain how these telescopes were marketed around much of the world under the various trademarks: Look for a new presence of new Lunt Engineering Changes in August This late production antique instrument is in uncommonly good condition, with some components still wrapped and unused as they were sent from the Nihon Seiko factory in Japan.
